We’ve made a Mapping Guide!

Small, alternative or underground cultural organisations rarely show up on popular maps, so STARTUP built a way to find them, and then our partners at Stockholm University, Thomas Borén and Magnus Liistamo wrote a guide so anyone can do the same thing.

‘Mapping guide: Doing your own map’ walks you through a method that draws on open geospatial databases (via Overture Maps Foundation and OpenStreetMap) to generate a rough starting point, then explains how to refine it together with the people local to the scene — artists, venue owners, local experts — until the map reflects a concept you’ve defined yourself.

The result is a map of your category, on your terms: design hotels, independent art spaces, grassroots venues, whatever matters to your community.
