die Urbanisten’s “Colorful Island” living lab

The spring festival at the Union business park in Dortmund was die Urbanisten’s first public event for their “Colorful Island” living lab as part of the STARTUP project, opening the doors of its workshop space to local visitors and community members. The event offered an opportunity to introduce the project, gather feedback, and explore how the workshop might evolve in response to local needs. Visitors expressed strong interest in practical and community-oriented activities, including bicycle repair, textile work, and repair services, highlighting the potential of the space as a collaborative neighbourhood resource.

Alongside the workshop activities, the team also launched its first participatory campaign, inviting attendees to share their experiences and perspectives on public space, culture, and community life in the district. Early feedback pointed to a desire for more welcoming and accessible public spaces, while also recognising the importance of local street art and creative expression in shaping the area’s identity. The event marked an important first step in building stronger local connections and expanding community participation within the Living Lab.
