Independent, artist-run cultural spaces are the backbone of creative placemaking. Most never make it onto official cultural maps, so we’ve built one that includes them.

Our research teams across 7 European cities used a custom API-mapping tool, built on OvertureMaps and 200+ open digital databases, to identify and manually verify hundreds of independent cultural venues, community initiatives and creative hubs, what we’re calling “local cultural praesidia”.

It’s a resource for researchers, local communities, policymakers, and anyone curious about (or fighting for) the cultural life of their neighbourhood.
